Cover letters are a key part of your job application. While your CV will provide your general details to an agent/prospective employer, the cover letter is your opportunity to express why you want that particular position and why you have the relevant skills and experience. The letter should follow a formal letter format and should be a separate document to your CV. Keep the cover letter succinct and avoid repeating your CV. Introduce yourself, explain your current circumstances and what you will bring to the role. Keep a very close eye on the job advert/specification and tie your letter closely to the requirements outlined, again, avoid repeating the job ad/spec and be sure to use your own language. Always end your cover letter on a positive note and include your contact details.
